Holes in eBay, Holes in Skype & Crasing Stock Prices
[sigh] All I can say right now is that I'm glad I didn't invest more money in eBay stock. Today shares of eBay stock closed at $25.58 - A THREE YEAR LOW!! Also today, eBay announced that they had fixed a hole in their picture hosting software (funny how they have to admit to problems such as this if they are going to make a patch available). Finally, there is buzz all over the internet today about a crack in the Skype software that allowed a Chinese firm to reverse engineer the software and that firm plans to launch a Skype competing program next month. Legal? - I'm sure the Chinese company could care less about legality and about stealing another company's code, especially when they are using eBay's code, which allegedly was stolen by the company that eBay bought Skype from.
The stock drop is not only pricking investors, but causing many unhappy site users to voice their concerns. There is a lot of "See, I told you so's" going around the eBay blogs, forums and such. Earnings reports come out on Monday, if the stock doesn't meet expectations Meg Whitman will no doubtedly be sweating bullets all during the next quarter.
The cracks in eBay's photo code and problems with Skype, are sure to tax heavily on the everyday user. Why?, you ask? Simple, ebay shares are in the tank, problems, glitches, fraud etc, combined with lower listings, summer slowdown etc. will mean one of two reactions will come from eBay. It will be either a fee increase or a series of dumb-ass listing fee sales (which are widely attributed to lower selling prices by sellers).
Rumors have been flying around the eBay forums for some time now about listing fee increases. My guess is that we'll know within a week or two, what new "vibrancy" lays in store for us.
